Imagine you were a scientist, and your wife was a doctor. Now imagine that the two of you lived on a planet where life was near perfect. There was no real hardship to contend with, and your lives were filled with an idyllic lifestyle that freed you from all worry. And yet, over time, you find yourself wanting more, seeking something that could challenge you.
Now, suppose one day you were offered the chance to fly across the galaxy to a planet unlike yours in every respect. On this planet, life is primitive; there is no technology, no culture, no real civilization to speak of. And the people living there, well, you would appear almost God-like in comparison. But what if these people needed you? What if you are the next step in their evolutionary plan? Would you be interested in helping out?
